Web Design with Text Versus Images

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

I’m helpnig a web designer put together a site so that it is search-friendly. If you need a Sacramento Web Designer. I quickly learned that designers love to design with images. Image (or Flash) heavy design can make it nearly imposssible to rank in search.

One of the key things Google considers when ranking a page is the page text, including headings, bold text, and linked text. Google gets very specific about the text, for example which words are first on the page (called prominence), how often do they repeat (density), etc. If your keyword is first on the page and it’s big and bold, you are telling Google your page is about that keyword.

This is a simplistic example, but if a user searches for “Sacramento private school” Google will look at all the pages on the internet with that key phrase and then factor in which pages have hose exact words are at the top of the page and repeated often throughout the page.

Search engines can’t easily read what text is displayed within images. If your site has all of the text hidden in images, Google won’t find it and will not know your site is about those words. It will be impossible to compete in search results where other sites use the words prominently and frequently.

Blog Attached to Websites – Why You Need One

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

The easiest thing you can do to appear in search FAST is to create a blog. There are a couple of reasons why a blog can help your search engine optimization. Blogs have a lot of search engine optimization built right into them, like search-friendly URLs, labels called tags and categories to help search engines classify it, and they’re looked at frequently by search engines for ranking.

The best thing about a blog is that most are free and you can write and manage your web site blog without needing to hire a web developer. Think of a blog as an online journal about your business that you can use to talk about your products, events, news, or post pictures.

Blogs allow you to create an additional website for your company at no cost, and now you have two chances to show up in earch engines. Its a great idea to have your website link to your blog, and vice versa. My Sacramento child photographer client does a good job of incorporating her blog into her website, updating it often, and using highly searched keywords in her blog posts.

Tracking Search ROI with Google Analytics

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

Before getting started with search engine optimization, it is helpful to know the existing traffic of your site. Google Analytics is the best stats tool I’ve found (free or paid) and is used by small businesses and enterprise Fortune 500 companies. The benefit for SEO is to show you exactly what users typed into search engines to find your site. So you’ll know if it was “Folsom massage” that attracted new business or “massage services in Folsom”. That’s important so you know how to show up even higher in search, or create additional pages and rank for multiple terms.

Google Analytics will tell you exactly how many site visits you got from the search keywords I optimized for you. Instant measure of ROI.
