Web Design with Text Versus Images
Tuesday, December 30th, 2008I’m helpnig a web designer put together a site so that it is search-friendly. If you need a Sacramento Web Designer. I quickly learned that designers love to design with images. Image (or Flash) heavy design can make it nearly imposssible to rank in search.
One of the key things Google considers when ranking a page is the page text, including headings, bold text, and linked text. Google gets very specific about the text, for example which words are first on the page (called prominence), how often do they repeat (density), etc. If your keyword is first on the page and it’s big and bold, you are telling Google your page is about that keyword.
This is a simplistic example, but if a user searches for “Sacramento private school” Google will look at all the pages on the internet with that key phrase and then factor in which pages have hose exact words are at the top of the page and repeated often throughout the page.
Search engines can’t easily read what text is displayed within images. If your site has all of the text hidden in images, Google won’t find it and will not know your site is about those words. It will be impossible to compete in search results where other sites use the words prominently and frequently.
